You know what’s worse than painting horses? Painting white. It’s such an annoying colour to work with. I know that there are many recipes for getting good off-whites, usually laying paints from cream or similar, but when you want a solid, pure white, it can be tricky.
Here’s where Vallejo’s Pale Grey Wash comes in handy. The tabard and chest armour on this model were painted white then given a wash of the stuff, which just about puts enough grey into the folds to give it some depth. I didn’t apply the same to the faceplate, as I think I’d have just ended up making it look dirty and smeared.
The Teutonic cross on the tabard should have thin lines running along each arm of the cloak, but my freehand isn’t at the point where I can make that work across the folds of robes. My thinking is that this knight lost his order-issued tabard and has had to make a new one out of a bedsheet and felt tips.
Knights are an interesting inclusion in the forces of the otherwise fairly modern-looking and sounding PanOceanian (PanOceanic?) forces. In game terms they are primarily a heavy assault force, with most models brandishing longswords and rapid firing weapons. They are then backed up by a selection of ‘sergeants’ who carry out specialised duties such as hacking, sniping, so on.
I’m not entirely happy with the sword. I put a red wash over silver, but it just looks like a poor attempt at dried blood. I’m calling him completed for now, but when I get more knights I might try something different and come back to him .
Challenge Tally: 306/365
Edit: Had an idea for the sword late last night, just given it a go and much happier now.
That looks great. The sword gives a much more ‘sci-fi’ effect, although I would say that the brightness of the red pulls the eye away from rest of the miniature (at least in that one photo). You’ve made the white look excellent which is quite a feat considering how hard it is to paint white well.
I’m constantly amazed by your painting throughput. Over 300 miniatures (and counting) in less than a year is really fast, particularly considering the high quality of all of them.
